Chapter 1 begins with a historical overview of composing programs. It continues with a polemic on musical nomenclature, with a general discussion of how human composers interact with composing programs, and an overview of subsequent chapters.
The historical overview provided the basis for my Leonardo survey, “Automated Composition in Retrospect: 1956-1986”.
